KOREAN SHIP SEIZED IN PANAMA: CREW CHARGED
A
North Korean Vessel, The Chong Chan Gang, has been seized in Panama
after it was found to be carrying over 240 tonnes of undeclared
military cargo including obsolete defensive weapons which were hidden
in containers under a shipment of Cuban sugar. Cuba admitted being
behind the stash of weapons, but insisted that they were only being
sent to North Korea for repair and that they were to be returned
afterward. The United Nations Sanctions prohibit the supply of arms
to North Korea in the dispute over its nuclear programme and Panama
have now requested that the UN investigate whether there has been a
breach, as well as charging the crew just hours after North Korea
urged Panama to release their ship and crew without delay.
